From 31st March 2025, businesses will have to separate food waste from all other waste under the government's "Simpler Recycling" reform. 

This legislation is mandatory for all non-household municipal premises in England, excluding micro-firms (businesses with fewer than 10 employees) 

 

How will it affect me? 

 

The legislation requires businesses, schools, hospitals and other non-household premises to separate dry recycling from general waste collection. Materials for separate collection include: 

  • Paper and cardboard 
  • Cartons (i.e. Tetrapak) 
  • Metals (i.e. cans, tins, foils) 
  • Plastic (i.e. pots, tubs and trays) 
  • Glass (i.e. bottles and jars) 
  • Food waste (all food intended for human or household pet consumption and biodegradable material such as fruit and vegetable skins, tea bags)
